Haunting in Garden City, New York

Kitty was always on alert, and there seemed to be orbs near him all the time.

The year was 2011, and Loren and I had spontaneously moved to New York. Okay, Long Island. We rented a basement in Garden City for $1200/month. Little did we know, that price wasn't the scariest thing about our new home.

We arrived the same day as Hurricane Irene. She was the first storm of it's size to make landfall as far north as New York in years. Irene was just another thing to add to our list of "Reason's We Shouldn't Live in New York". Along with the fact that we had a terrible time when we visited months prior, spent all our savings on moving, and hit the Jersey Turnpike at 5 PM on a weekday. No, it wasn't our best decision, but we gained a lot of life experience in a short amount of time. Whether we wanted to or not...

Nothing in that ever expanding list mattered to us at the time, because we had achieved our mutual goal since we were in grade school separately. We were out of Texas! The night we arrived, the night Irene made landfall mind you, we were led to our new basement-home by the friendly family upstairs and told to "hunker down".

We excitedly unpacked our moving van, aka the Ford Taurus named Selena, let Kitty out of his cage-home atop all our belongings, and commenced the hunkering... down... ing. Our new home was 600 square feet of moist concrete. This... was worth our $1200? These were not the thoughts running through our naive 20 something year old minds. We were alone! We were finally away from "home". Though both of us had been on our own since 18, we were so far from our family... there was no one to save us now.

The THRILL of it all! Our first night, The Night of Irene, we were so excited and just wanted to show our family back home we had done it. We were there and did it all by ourselves. Promptly, we started taking pictures to send to, and show off a little, to our naysayer family and friends. What we saw when we reviewed our brag-worthy pictures though, shocked us. We noticed some things that we didn't see with our eyes in the grainy pictures on our 2011 less-than-smart-phones.

As you can see, orbs were in every single picture. Which many of us ghost hunting enthusiasts speculate are indicative of paranormal activity. These orbs seemed to show up each time a picture was taken, no matter what area of the luxurious basement-apartment we took them. Even more frightening was a face in a mirror, looking as if it was laughing or smiling menacingly (presumably, it could have been smiling casually but simply had a menacing face) at us in a mirror.

Do you see the face? Check in the mirror of the shelf on the far left.

This was something neither Loren, Kitty, nor I had ever experienced before. Some really negative energy was here. Kitty and Loren were the most affected by it. Kitty never slept, howled all night, and would stare at nothing for hours. I know what you're thinking, sounds like any other cat, but that's not Kitty. He's a playful ball of fur that does not waste time staring at nothing.

Nothing was in front of Kitty when this was taken. We have no idea what is covering his face.

Loren spent a lot of time at home, where she heard footsteps in the house above when no one was there. We rarely slept a full night, being woken up by noises or Kitty howling. It eventually got so bad, we could hardly stand to be there, spending our free-time at Target or Barnes and Noble leaving Kitty to fend for himself against the potentially volatile ghost haunting our basement-apartment. Sorry Kitty.

This is one of the many reasons we left New York in such a hurry. It's also one of the things that sparked our interest in the paranormal. Whether it was an intelligent entity hanging on or merely energy left from a previous experience or situation, we've yet to encounter anything so strong.
